# Best AI agents for finance teams (2026): 8 checks to run before you buy

Published October 13, 2026 15 min read

Key takeaways

- The best AI agents for finance teams in 2026 do a whole job, such as a reconciliation or an invoice match, and stop for a named approver before anything posts.
- Buyers paid a median of $9,720 a year for Vic.ai, $15,000 for Numeric, $24,481 for FloQast, and $40,125 for BlackLine for the full platform, not the AI agents alone, according to Vendr data checked in October 2026.
- Test any agent on a month you've already closed: if it can't find 3 planted errors and stop for approval before posting, it isn't ready for your books.

AI agents for finance are software that do a finance job from start to finish, such as a bank reconciliation or an invoice match, and hand the finished work to a person to approve. The right agent gives your team back prep hours, catches discrepancies before they reach the ledger, and keeps every ERP posting behind a named approver. This guide covers what counts as an agent, an 8-check test, the best AI agents for finance teams by job, general assistants like ChatGPT, security, prices, and a demo script you can run.

We make AI agents for finance teams, including the Close Agent and FP&A Agent on this list, and we hold ourselves to the same test as every other tool on this page. Vendor facts were checked on each vendor's own site, in press coverage, and in Vendr's buyer data on October 6–13, 2026.

## What are AI agents for finance, and what can they do?

An AI agent for finance is software that takes a finance task and gathers data from your ERP, bank, and other systems. It does the work, investigates what doesn't match, and prepares an output such as a journal entry or workpaper for review. Knowing what counts as an agent helps you compare tools on what they actually do.

- **AI agent** Owns a workflow, uses several systems, and produces a finished action for a person to approve
- **Copilot** Answers questions and drafts text when you ask, but you move the work between systems
- **Rules automation** Runs fixed rules, such as matching on amount and date, and stops when something falls outside them

In practice, finance teams use AI agents for account reconciliations, accruals and other journal entries, invoice matching, cash application, collections, variance explanations, and close reports. Agentic AI for finance is the wider term for this approach: software that plans and carries out multi-step work instead of answering one prompt. For how that work fits into the month, see [what is month-end close](https://emptyspaces.ai/resources/blog/month-end-close).

## AI agent vs copilot vs automation: What's the difference?

The difference is who does the work and who moves it between systems. Seeing them side by side helps you spot copilots and rules engines sold as agents.

| Compared on | Rules automation | Copilot | AI agent |
| ------------------ | -------------------------- | ------------------------ | -------------------------------------- |
| How it starts | A schedule or trigger | You ask a question | A task, schedule, or “run all” |
| Scope | One rule set | One question or document | A whole workflow across systems |
| Handles exceptions | Stops and flags | Suggests, if you ask | Investigates and proposes a fix |
| Output | Matched or unmatched items | An answer or draft | A finished entry, workpaper, or report |
| Who moves the work | Your team | Your team | The agent, then a named approver |

Example

Your June bank reconciliation is off by $12,400. Rules automation matches 958 of 960 lines and leaves 2 for your team. A copilot explains possible causes when an accountant pastes in the list. An agent matches the same 958 lines, traces the other 2 to a $9,900 deposit in transit and a $2,500 duplicate vendor payment, drafts the entry for the duplicate, and sends it to your controller to approve. The $9,900 and $2,500 add up to the $12,400 difference.

| Item | Amount |
| ------------------------------------------------- | ---------- |
| Difference between bank and book, June 30 | $12,400.00 |
| Deposit in transit: timing, no entry | $9,900.00 |
| Duplicate vendor payment: entry sent for approval | $2,500.00 |
| Left unexplained | $0.00 |

## The 8-check test: How to tell an agent from a copilot

The 8-check test shows whether a tool does the work or only organizes it. Use them as your checklist in every demo.

| Check | What it means | Why it matters |
| ---------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| 1. Owns a workflow end to end | Takes a task from data to finished output | Removes prep hours, not just steps |
| 2. Uses several systems | Reads the ERP, bank, subledgers, and documents | Most discrepancies sit between systems |
| 3. Investigates exceptions | Explains differences with amounts, dates, and sources | Your team reviews answers, not raw lists |
| 4. Produces an action | Drafts the entry, workpaper, or report | The work is done when it reaches review |
| 5. ERP write behind approval | Nothing posts until a person approves the exact lines | Keeps the books under your control |
| 6. Separate preparer and reviewer | The agent can't approve its own work | Keeps segregation of duties intact |
| 7. Audit trail of agent steps | Every query and step is logged | Gives auditors evidence for every entry |
| 8. Runs on a schedule | Works through the month without prompting | Keeps work moving before close starts |

## Which AI agent is best for finance teams in 2026?

The best AI agent for your team depends on the job you need done, because each vendor is strongest in one or two areas. Starting from the job narrows a long vendor list to the two or three tools worth a demo.

| Job | Best pick | Also consider | What to check in the others |
| ----------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| Month-end close and reconciliations | Empty Spaces | BlackLine Verity Prepare, FloQast Transform, Ledge | Whether entries post only after a named approver signs off |
| Accounts payable | Vic.ai for high invoice volume | Stampli, Tipalti, Ramp; Empty Spaces for AP checks inside the close | How much of each invoice still needs a person |
| Accounts receivable and collections | HighRadius or Tesorio for cash application and outreach at volume | Microsoft Finance Agent; Empty Spaces for AR review inside the close | Whether postings wait for approval |
| FP&A | Empty Spaces for analysis on the model and tools you already have; Planful, Cube, or Datarails for a new planning platform | Claude, ChatGPT for Excel | Whether the agent works on your existing model |

## Best AI agents for month-end close and reconciliations

Close agents are the AI agents for accounting where the 8 checks matter most, because they draft entries that land in your general ledger. Ask each vendor to show you the 8 checks working on your own data, using the demo script below.

### 1. Empty Spaces

Our [Close Agent](https://emptyspaces.ai/product/close) works your close checklist through the month on schedules you set, reconciles the ledger to bank statements, subledgers, and invoices, and prepares the balanced entry and workpaper. A named approver approves the exact lines before anything posts.

- **What it covers** Cash and bank, receivables, payables, payroll, accruals, prepaids, revenue, fixed assets, inventory, intercompany, and manual journals, with every statement line matched rather than sampled
- **ERPs** Reads from and posts approved entries to NetSuite, Oracle, SAP, and Microsoft Dynamics, including Business Central
- **Controls** Separate preparer and reviewer, closed months locked against ERP writes, and a full history on every entry: who prepared it, who approved it, and why
- **Start** Read-only mode is available if your team wants to get comfortable first, with posting switched on later

Illustration: the cash and bank group of the March 2026 close checklist in Autonomous Close. The operating-account bank reconciliation is signed off, the payroll account is in review, the receivables tie-out is in progress and two tasks have not started. A chip shows Run all started four tasks.

### 2. BlackLine Verity Prepare

BlackLine made Verity Prepare generally available on July 27, 2026, describing it as a “multi-agent AI system” that analyzes documentation, matches transactions, and assembles reconciliations with human oversight. It's the strongest choice if you already run BlackLine's matching rules.

- **Where it falls short** It works inside BlackLine, so you buy into the full platform, and learning difficulty and complexity are common complaints in G2 reviews
- **Price** Vendr's median for BlackLine is $40,125 a year across 74 purchases

### 3. FloQast Transform

FloQast's agents come with its higher Close AI package, and its Transform tool builds an agent from a close your team has already finished. Its AI Assistant, announced September 16, 2026, reviews entries before approval, and in FloQast's words, “The human makes every call.”

- **Where it falls short** Your team tests and signs off each agent Transform builds, and by FloQast's own September 2026 figures, agents are live at 125+ of the more than 3,500 accounting teams that use it
- **Price** Vendr's median for FloQast is $24,481 a year across 312 purchases

For a fuller comparison, see [FloQast alternatives](https://emptyspaces.ai/resources/blog/floqast-alternatives).

### 4. Numeric

Numeric offers close management with live ERP connections, auto-reconciliations, flux analysis, and cash matching that it says can “Automate 90%+ of your bank, AR, and AP recs.”

- **Where it falls short** It says “No journal entry posts without the proper approvals,” but its reviewers check the rules so they don't review every entry, so confirm in the demo whether a named approver signs off the exact lines
- **Price** Vendr's median is $15,000 a year across 48 purchases

### 5. Ledge

Ledge says its agents prepare reconciliations, working papers, and journal entries for your team to approve, and that teams can go “Live in 1 day.”

- **Where it falls short** Its published material centers on NetSuite, its deepest integration. It lists SAP S/4HANA and Microsoft Dynamics 365 too, so check how deep the fit goes if you run another ERP

For the full category beyond agents, see [best month-end close software](https://emptyspaces.ai/resources/blog/best-month-end-close-software).

## Best AI agents for accounts payable

AP agents read invoices, match them to purchase orders and receipts, and route them for approval. The vendor numbers below are each vendor's own claims, so test them on your invoices.

| Tool | What the agent does | Vendor's claim | Where it falls short |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Vic.ai | Invoice processing, plus VicAgents for the AP inbox, contracts, and analytics | An 85% no-touch rate by month 6 and a 99% invoice accuracy rate | Focused on invoices, so the rest of your close needs another tool |
| Stampli | Billy, its AI agent, codes, matches, and routes invoices | Billy “performs on average 89% of the work” across more than 2,700 ERP-aligned fields | The remaining work stays with your AP team |
| Tipalti | Nine agents, including invoice capture, PO matching, approver recommendations, and diagnosing ERP sync errors | Up to 80% less time managing payables, from a survey of its customers | Each agent does one step, so no single agent owns the workflow |
| Ramp | Accounting Agent codes spend, posts accruals, and syncs low-risk spend automatically | Launched February 2026 for Ramp Plus customers | Ask who sets “low-risk” and who signs off before sync |
| Empty Spaces | Checks every invoice line against the PO and goods receipt: vendor, quantity, unit price, tax, and duplicates | Failed checks become close exceptions | Built for AP review inside the close rather than invoice capture |

Illustration: the March 2026 tie-outs in Autonomous Close. The operating and payroll accounts and receivables tie to the cent; payables carries one exception, an invoice of $7,200.00 booked to accrued expenses instead of the vendor subledger.

Illustration: the one exception the Close Agent names on the payables tie-out, invoice INV-88213 from Brightwater Freight for $7,200.00, in the vendor subledger but posted to accrued expenses in the ledger.

To roll out an AP agent, run one entity's invoices for a month, compare its coding with what your team posted, then widen the scope.

For expense tracking, Ramp captures receipts and codes spend at the moment of purchase, and Tipalti's agent scans receipts, with automated coding for card transactions.

## Best AI agents for accounts receivable and collections

AR agents apply cash, prioritize collections, and draft follow-ups. The right one depends on your volume of payments and customers.

- **HighRadius** Says it runs “190+ AI Agents” and claims “90%+ Straight Through Cash Posting” for cash application. Where it falls short: it claims “95% Auto-Journal Posting” in the close, and its journal entry page says entries move through rule-based approval hierarchies, so ask which of those postings a person approves. Vendr's median is $12,973 a year
- **Tesorio** Calls itself “AI agents that handle the full order-to-cash lifecycle” and holds 4.6 out of 5 on G2 from 243 reviews. Where it falls short: it covers order to cash only, so your close needs a separate tool
- **Empty Spaces** Reviews receivables inside the close, with aging buckets, part-paid and disputed invoices, how often each customer was chased, promises to pay, and over-credit-limit flags

## Best AI agents for FP&A

FP&A agents explain variances, answer questions about your plan, and draft forecasts for review. They don't post to your ERP, so check 5 matters less here than how well they work with your existing model.

- **Empty Spaces** Our [FP&A Agent](https://emptyspaces.ai/product/fpa) investigates variances, prepares management reports, proposes forecast updates, and runs scenario analysis across the systems and models your finance team already uses. Your plan and model stay where they are, and finance reviews each proposed change before accepting it
- **Planful** Its Planner and Analyst assistants build plans from your existing accounts and explain variances at account level, its Signals feature flags anomalies, and forecasts are generated “for you to review”
- **Cube** Data Manager, Analyst, Planner, and Business Partner agents, plus an MCP server for outside AI tools
- **Datarails** Positions itself as an “AI operating system for finance teams” and says more than 2,000 companies use it

Planful, Cube, and Datarails each work best on data already loaded into their own platform, so the agent is only as good as your setup. If your team is still building its variance process, start with [what is FP&A](https://emptyspaces.ai/resources/blog/fpa) and [budget vs actual](https://emptyspaces.ai/resources/blog/budget-vs-actual).

## Is there a ChatGPT for finance and accounting?

Yes. OpenAI and Anthropic released finance tools in 2026, and Microsoft's Finance Agent has been generally available since October 2025. They're useful for analysis and one-off work. They stop short of a controlled close, because none of them publishes a path to post approved entries to your ERP with a separate approver.

| Tool | What it does | Where it stops |
| ----------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| ChatGPT for Excel | Builds and updates models in your workbook and asks permission before edits; generally available since May 5, 2026 | OpenAI says “complex formulas or edge cases may still require manual refinement” |
| Claude finance agents | Ten templates released May 5, 2026, including a month-end closer that “prepares journal entries” and a general ledger reconciler | Anthropic says “users stay firmly in the loop”; no ERP posting is described |
| Microsoft Finance Agent | Reconciliation reports in Excel and collections in Outlook. A preview in Copilot chat can also take actions in the ERP for payables and receivables | No sign-off or posting control is described, including for the preview's ERP actions |

They fit a single entity with low volume and a close run in Excel. If you build your own agents on these models, your team owns the ERP connections, approvals, and audit trail.

## How do AI agents handle data security and compliance?

Good AI agents keep your data in an environment you approve, never show credentials to the model, and can't post without a person's approval. Asking these questions in the security review saves you from finding gaps after the contract is signed.

| Ask the vendor | A good answer |
| --------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Where does it run? | Your choice of SaaS, your own cloud, or on-premises |
| Whose AI model and keys? | Your choice of model provider, with your own keys |
| Can the model see our credentials? | No, credentials are encrypted and never shown to models |
| What can it write to the ERP? | Only entries a named person approved, line by line |
| Can an approved entry change before it posts? | No, any change sends it back for approval |
| What's logged? | Every query, step, and change, in a log that can't be edited |
| Which audits? | SOC 2 Type II, with the report available under NDA |

Example

Your controller approves a $25,000 accrual. Before it posts, the amount changes to $32,000. A well-controlled agent treats that as a new entry and sends it back, so the $7,000 difference never reaches the ledger unapproved.

Illustration of an approval request: an agent's purchase invoice posting to Business Central, held until a Controller approves it.

Agents also reduce errors and fraud risk when they check every line instead of a sample, flag duplicate payments, and keep segregation of duties between preparer and approver.

Our Close Agent runs in a dedicated AWS account we manage for you, in your own AWS account, or on-premises. It supports SSO, your own model keys, and AI spend caps by group, and we've completed SOC 2 Type I and Type II audits.

Illustration of an activity log: a sign-in through Okta, a role change, a credential rotation, an ERP write requested by Omar Haddad and approved by Sara Malik, the agent's posting of it, and a failed sign-in.

## How do you choose an AI agent for your finance team?

Choose by the job that costs your team the most hours, check which ERPs the agent can read and post to, and test two or three agents on a month you've already closed. Testing on a known month turns a polished demo into evidence you can compare across vendors.

A financial AI agent is only as useful as its access to your systems, so ask which of four levels it reaches: file uploads, read-only ERP access, drafts written back for review, or posting after approval. Check this per ERP, because it often differs: Sage Intacct's own Close agent “doesn't post entries or make changes without your approval.”

Vendor implementation claims range from one day to several months, so let your own pilot set the timeline.

### The demo script

1. **Pick a closed month** Choose one entity and 5–10 accounts, including cash, accruals, and one intercompany account
2. **Plant known errors** Add a duplicate vendor payment, a missing accrual, and an unrecorded bank fee
3. **Run the agent read-only** Ask it to reconcile and explain every difference, without posting
4. **Remove one input** Take out a bank statement and check that the agent asks for it instead of guessing
5. **Check the trail** Ask to see every query it ran and the source behind each number
6. **Approve and post in a sandbox** Confirm that nothing posts until a named reviewer approves, and that the preparer can't approve

Example

You plant a $4,812.50 duplicate payment, an $18,000 missing accrual, and a $2,310 bank fee. A strong agent finds all three, drafts the accrual as a debit to expense and a credit to accrued liabilities for $18,000, and sends it for approval. Score each vendor on how many of the 3 it finds, whether it asks for the missing statement, and whether anything posts without approval.

After the demo, run a 30-day pilot. Use a closed month in week 1, hard cases in week 2, and the live month side by side with your team in week 3. In week 4, switch on approved posting for a few accounts.

Measure ROI as prep hours removed and days taken off the close, against your baseline from [how long should month-end close take](https://emptyspaces.ai/resources/blog/month-end-close-time). If the agent saves 60 hours a month at a loaded cost of $70 an hour, that's $4,200 a month, or $50,400 a year, which you can set against the vendor's price.

For the entries to test, see [month-end journal entries](https://emptyspaces.ai/resources/blog/month-end-journal-entries) and the [month-end close process](https://emptyspaces.ai/resources/blog/month-end-close-process).

## What do AI agents for finance cost?

Numeric and FloQast don't publish prices, and neither do we, so buyer data is the most reliable guide. Comparing medians before a demo helps you spot a quote that's out of range. The figures below are Vendr's, read on October 9, 2026, and for Vic.ai and HighRadius on October 11.

| Vendor | Median a year | Range | Purchases |
| ---------- | ------------- | ---------------- | ---------- |
| Vic.ai | $9,720 | $4,535–$70,532 | Not stated |
| HighRadius | $12,973 | $12,171–$16,862 | Not stated |
| Numeric | $15,000 | $4,320–$41,976 | 48 |
| FloQast | $24,481 | $10,147–$68,727 | 312 |
| BlackLine | $40,125 | $13,154–$101,000 | 74 |

These medians cover each vendor's whole contract, not only its AI features, and the narrow HighRadius range suggests a single module. We quote each customer for its scope.

## Will AI agents replace accountants?

No. AI agents take over preparation, such as matching, drafting, and chasing, while your accountants review, decide, and handle the exceptions agents raise. Planning for that shift helps your team spend its hours on judgment instead of data work.

Review becomes the work, which is why checks 3 and 7 matter: an agent that shows its sources and steps makes review fast, while one that doesn't just moves the work to a new screen.

To set up the review side, start with your [month-end close checklist](https://emptyspaces.ai/resources/blog/month-end-close-checklist) and assign a named reviewer to every task the agent prepares.

## Next step: Run the test with two vendors

Run the demo script with two vendors on your shortlist, using the same closed month for both, so you can compare results line by line. If you want to see an agent prepare your close for approval on the ERP you already run, explore our [Close Agent](https://emptyspaces.ai/product/close).
