Best month-end close software (2026): Compared by work done

24 min read

Key takeaways

  • The best month-end close software in 2026 does the close work itself, preparing reconciliations and entries for your team to approve, instead of only tracking who owns each task.
  • Our Close Agent leads this list because it reconciles every line, prepares balanced entries with workpapers, works on top of the ERP you already run, and posts nothing until a named approver signs off.
  • Before you buy, test your top two tools on one of your own bank accounts, from reconciliation to an approved entry posted in your ERP.

The best month-end close software is the tool that removes the most work from your close while keeping every entry under your control. Close software now falls into three groups. Close management tools track tasks, automation platforms reconcile by rule, and AI agents prepare reconciliations and entries for a person to approve. Choosing the right group first saves you weeks of demos and ties your budget to the hours the software actually removes. This guide compares the leading tools by the work each one does and picks the best fit for each situation. It also gives you the controls to require and a test to run.

We make the Close Agent, the first tool on this list, and we hold ourselves to the same test as every other tool on this page. Every vendor fact below was checked on the vendor's own site on October 6–10, 2026.

What is month-end close software?

Month-end close software is software that organizes, automates, or performs the work of closing your books each month. It connects to your ERP, tracks every close task, and depending on the tool, matches transactions, prepares reconciliations, and drafts journal entries.

  • Close management softwareTracks the close checklist, owners, due dates, reconciliations, and sign-offs, while your team still prepares the work
  • Close automation softwareMatches transactions, reconciles accounts that tie, and posts recurring entries using rules you set
  • AI agentsPrepare reconciliations, workpapers, and journal entries from your data, then send them to a person to approve before anything posts

What is close management software?

Close management software is the coordination layer of the close. It holds your checklist, assigns each task to an owner and a reviewer, tracks due days, and stores reconciliations and sign-offs in one place. It gives your controller a live view of what's done and what's late, but your team still prepares the reconciliations and entries.

What is month-end close automation software?

Month-end close automation software does part of the close work itself. It pulls balances and transactions from your ERP and bank, matches them by rule, reconciles the accounts that tie, and posts recurring entries such as depreciation and prepaid amortization. Your team works the exceptions the rules can't clear.

AI agents go a step further. They investigate exceptions, prepare reconciliations and judgment entries such as accruals, and attach the evidence, so your team's job becomes review and approval.

Close software works alongside your ERP rather than replacing it. If you're still mapping what the close involves, start with What is month-end close?

How we chose and ranked these tools

We built this list from what finance buyers actually ask, then ranked each tool on the same criteria. Here's how:

  1. We started with buyer questionsWe ran buyer prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity on October 6, 2026, and reviewed Google's results and finance forums. We included the tools those answers named most often.
  2. We checked every fact at the sourceEvery product claim comes from the vendor's own website, checked on October 6–10, 2026. Where a figure is the vendor's own, we say so.
  3. We ranked by work removed and control keptThe main question was how much close work the tool does while a person stays in control of every posting.
  4. We scored each tool on six criteriaEach answers one question:
    • Work done: Does it prepare reconciliations, entries, and workpapers, or only track them?
    • Control: Is there approval before posting, with a reviewer separate from the preparer?
    • Evidence: Does the audit trail record every step, including agent steps?
    • ERP fit: Does it read from and post back to your ERP without replacing it?
    • Security: Where does it run, and which SOC 2 reports does the vendor hold?
    • Time to start: How quickly can it work on your own data?
  5. We left some tools outThis guide is for finance teams that keep their ERP. So we left out checklist apps for very small teams, tools built mainly for accounting firms, and new ERPs sold as a replacement for your ledger. Close features built into ERPs you may already run are covered under Other close tools.

We make the first tool on the list, and we scored it on the same criteria as every other tool.

Close management vs close automation vs AI agents

The three groups differ in who does the work, which is the question that decides your return. Matching the group to your bottleneck keeps you from paying for a checklist when your hours go into reconciliations and entries.

GroupWhat the software doesWhat your team still doesExamples
Close managementTracks tasks, owners, due dates, and sign-offsPrepares every reconciliation and entryFloQast Close Management
Close automationMatches transactions and reconciles accounts that tie, by ruleInvestigates exceptions and prepares judgment entriesBlackLine, Numeric, Trintech, ZoneReconcile
AI agentsPrepares reconciliations, workpapers, and journal entries from source dataReviews and approves the work before it postsEmpty Spaces, Ledge, Maxima, Hyphenate, FloQast Close AI

The category is moving toward agents. FloQast now sells an AI package with agents and journal posting, and BlackLine describes its Verity Prepare agent as executing end-to-end reconciliation preparation. Oracle and Sage have also added close agents to their own products.

How does month-end close software improve efficiency?

Month-end close software improves efficiency by moving work out of the first days of the month and by removing the manual matching that takes most of your team's time. The gains are largest where your hours go today.

The data shows where those hours are. In Ledge's 2025 survey of 100 finance professionals, reconciling accounts ranked as the biggest time sink in the close, and cash reconciliation alone took 20–50 hours a month. The same survey found that 94% of teams used Excel in the close and most automated less than 40% of it.

Automation changes close times. In Ventana Research's 2022 findings, 69% of companies that had automated most or all of their close finished the quarter-end close within six business days, compared with 29% of companies with some or no automation.

Close software saves time in four ways:

  • Continuous reconciliationMatching runs daily or weekly, so only the last few days of exceptions remain at month-end
  • Fewer handoffsInputs, tasks, and sign-offs live in one place instead of email and spreadsheets
  • Prepared workAgents build reconciliations, workpapers, and entries, so your team reviews instead of rebuilding
  • Faster reviewEvery difference arrives with its source, amount, and date, so reviewers don't have to trace it themselves

For benchmarks on how long the close should take, see How long should month-end close take?

How to automate the month-end close

You automate the month-end close in stages, starting with high-volume matching and moving to judgment work once your controls are in place. Follow these eight steps:

  1. Standardize your checklistList every task with an owner, a reviewer, a due day, and its inputs, because automation needs a stable process to run. The Month-end close checklist gives you a starting structure.
  2. Connect your systemsLink your ERP, bank accounts, and subledgers such as payroll, billing, and spend tools. Starting in read-only mode lets the software work on your data before it can change anything.
  3. Automate matching and reconciliations firstBank, card, and subledger reconciliations take the most hours, so they return the most time.
  4. Automate recurring entriesDepreciation, prepaid amortization, and standard accruals follow fixed schedules, which makes them the next safe step.
  5. Let agents prepare the judgment workAgents can investigate exceptions and draft accruals and adjustments with their evidence, for a person to approve.
  6. Set the controls before you allow postingRequire a named approver, keep the preparer and reviewer separate, and limit what can post by entity, account, and amount.
  7. Move to a continuous closeRun reconciliations daily or weekly instead of waiting for month-end, so the last days of the close are for review.
  8. Measure the resultTrack days to close, hours per task, and open exceptions every month, and compare them with the month before you automated.

For the full order of close tasks, from cutoff to reporting, see Month-end close process.

Key features to look for in month-end close software

The right features depend on your bottleneck, but every shortlist should be tested against the same list. This table gives you the feature, why it matters, and the question to ask in the demo.

FeatureWhy it mattersQuestion to ask
Close checklist with owners and reviewersKeeps every task assigned and visibleCan each task have a named reviewer who isn't the preparer?
Works with your current ERPAvoids a ledger migrationDo we have to replace our ERP to use it?
ERP read and writeSaves re-keying balances and entriesDoes it post entries back to our ERP, or only read from it?
Transaction matchingRemoves the biggest time sink in the closeWhat share of our bank lines match automatically on our data?
Exception investigationTurns a list of breaks into causesDoes it show the cause and evidence, or only the difference?
Entry preparationMoves accruals and adjustments off your teamDoes it build the balanced entry and workpaper?
Approval before postingKeeps control of every postingCan anything post without a named approval?
Audit trailGives auditors evidence without extra workDoes the log record every agent step, not only user clicks?
Period lockStops changes after sign-offCan the period lock before every task is signed off?
Security and deploymentPasses your IT and security reviewCan it run in our own cloud or on-premises, and which SOC 2 reports do you hold?
AI cost controlsKeeps model usage inside your budgetCan we see AI spend and use our own model keys?

Our Close Agent covers every row in this table. It posts only after a named approval, logs every step it takes, and lets you bring your own model keys.

Can AI be used to automate the month-end close?

Yes, AI can automate much of the month-end close, including matching transactions, preparing reconciliations, calculating accruals, and drafting journal entries. A person should still approve every entry before it posts and sign off before the period locks.

Before you let any tool's agent post to your ERP, ask the vendor to show you these controls:

  • Approval before postingA named person approves each entry, and nothing posts without that approval
  • The approved entry is the posted entryIf the agent changes any line after approval, the entry goes back for approval
  • Separate preparer and reviewerThe agent counts as the preparer, so a person who didn't build the entry reviews it
  • Limits by entity, account, and amountThe agent can only post the entry types and amounts you allow
  • Fixed checks before postingDebits equal credits, the period is open, and the accounts and entities are valid
  • A trail from source to entryEvery amount links back to the statements, invoices, or calculations behind it
  • Reversal, not deletionA wrong entry is reversed and corrected, so the history stays intact

These are the same controls auditors expect from people, and they're the controls our Close Agent is built around.

What audit trail and compliance features should close software have?

Close software should give your auditors the evidence they need without your team rebuilding it at year-end. For an audited or SOX-ready close, look for these features:

  • Preparer and reviewer on every taskThe system records who prepared and who reviewed each reconciliation and entry, and blocks self-review
  • Evidence attached to the workEach reconciliation and entry links to the statements, invoices, and calculations behind it
  • A complete activity logEvery change people make, and every step an agent takes, is recorded with a timestamp
  • Approval before postingNo entry reaches the ERP without a named approval
  • Period lockThe period locks at sign-off, and closed periods stay locked

Our Close Agent records an audit log of every change people make and every step it takes, including the queries it runs against your ERP. Each journal entry keeps its full history: who prepared it, who approved it, why it was made, and every change before it posted. The month can't lock until every task is signed off, and closed periods stay locked.

Illustration: the trace of one agent run, completed in 24 seconds with 38,410 tokens for $0.04. The model call that ran it spans the run, and the tool calls inside it follow: the skill it loaded, the workspace it provisioned, a NetSuite query that failed and was made again, Plaid, Gmail and the code it ran, each with its time.

Month-end close software for NetSuite, Oracle, SAP, and Dynamics

The best close software for your team depends heavily on your ERP, because the tool has to read balances and post entries back. Check both directions in the demo, since some tools only read.

Because our Close Agent is ERP-agnostic, you don't have to replace your ERP or run a migration to use it. It reads from and posts approved entries to NetSuite, Oracle, SAP, and Microsoft Dynamics.

  • NetSuiteNetSuite has a built-in Period Close Checklist, and ZoneReconcile adds bank reconciliation inside NetSuite. Our Close Agent posts approved entries to NetSuite
  • OracleOracle Fusion Cloud EPM offers Account Reconciliation and Financial Consolidation and Close modules. Our Close Agent posts approved entries to Oracle
  • SAPSAP Advanced Financial Closing orchestrates closing tasks across SAP systems. Our Close Agent posts approved entries to SAP S/4HANA
  • Microsoft DynamicsOur Close Agent posts approved entries to Microsoft Dynamics, including Business Central
  • Sage IntacctSage Intacct includes its own Close Automation and Close agent
  • QuickBooks and OdooOur Close Agent reads from QuickBooks and Odoo

For each ERP on your list, ask the vendor to show a live entry posting in a test environment, not a slide.

Cloud vs on-premise close software

Close software is typically bought as a cloud service, but where it runs still matters for your security review. Ask each vendor whether it runs multi-tenant or single-tenant, where your data is stored, who can access it, and whether it can run inside your own environment.

Our Close Agent gives you three ways to deploy:

  • SaaSSingle-tenant, in a dedicated AWS account we run for you, in the region you choose
  • Your own cloudSingle-tenant, inside your own AWS account
  • On-premisesFor data-sensitive teams that need the software inside their own infrastructure

Every option includes SSO through SAML or OIDC, custom roles, and credentials that are encrypted and never shown to the AI models. You also choose the model provider and can bring your own keys.

How much does month-end close software cost?

Most month-end close software is priced by quote, including every major platform on this list. Vendr's buyer data, checked October 6, 2026, puts median annual contracts for the established platforms between $15,000 and $40,125, depending on the vendor.

The price you're quoted depends mostly on scope:

  • ModulesReconciliation matching, journal automation, and AI agents are often sold as separate packages
  • Entities and ERPsEach additional entity or ERP connection adds setup work
  • Transaction volumeMatching tools often price by the volume they process
  • SeatsSome vendors charge per user, while others price the platform
  • ImplementationSome vendors include setup, while others quote it separately
Pricing modelHow it worksWhat to ask
Per seatYou pay for each userDo reviewers, auditors, and read-only users count as seats?
PlatformOne price for the product, regardless of usersWhat's included, and what triggers a higher tier?
By moduleChecklist, matching, journals, and AI are priced separatelyWhich modules do we need for the work we want removed?
By volume or entityPrice rises with transactions or entitiesWhat happens to the price when we add an entity?

The better question is what the software removes. A tool that tracks your checklist saves coordination time, while a tool that prepares reconciliations and entries removes the hours your team spends building them.

Example

Your team spends 40 hours a month on cash reconciliation, at a fully loaded cost of $60 an hour. That's 40 × $60 = $2,400 a month, or $2,400 × 12 = $28,800 a year, on one task. A tool that removes most of that work pays for itself on cash alone, before accruals, payroll, or intercompany.

What about the cost of the AI itself?

Agent tools run on AI models, and model usage is a cost of its own. In Futurum's September 2026 survey of 1,636 enterprise technology decision makers, 46.9% of enterprises said their AI spend was over budget. Before you sign, ask each vendor these three questions:

  • Who pays for model usage? Is it included in the price, passed through at cost, or marked up?
  • Can we see and limit it?Can we track AI spend by workflow and set limits?
  • Can we use our own keys? Can we choose the model provider and bring our own keys?

With our Close Agent, you choose the model provider and can bring your own keys, and AI spend management is built in.

How long does it take to implement close software?

Implementation time depends on the group of software and the number of ERPs and entities you connect. A checklist tool can start as soon as your tasks are loaded, while automation and agent tools need ERP access, account mapping, and matching rules. Ask each vendor for a written plan with dates, who maps your ERP data, and what your team must provide.

Starting read-only shortens the path. Our Close Agent can begin in read-only mode, reading your ERP and preparing work, and you switch on posting when your team is comfortable.

Best month-end close software for small businesses

Small businesses with one entity and a short checklist often don't need dedicated close software yet. The tools to use first are already in your accounting system: bank feeds, the reconciliation tool, and a closing date that stops changes after you close the books.

Dedicated software becomes worth it when one of these is true:

  • You close more than one entityIntercompany and consolidation work multiplies quickly
  • Reconciliations take days, not hoursHigh transaction volume is where matching and agents pay back
  • You're preparing for an audit or raiseInvestors and auditors will ask for evidence, reviews, and a locked period
  • You're moving to a larger ERPMoving from QuickBooks to NetSuite or Business Central is a natural time to set up the close properly

Our Close Agent is built for mid-market and enterprise finance teams. It reads from QuickBooks, so a growing team can start with reconciliations and exceptions before it changes ERP.

Is there a cheaper alternative to FloQast?

Yes, if you only need a checklist, NetSuite's built-in Period Close Checklist or a well-built spreadsheet with owners, reviewers, and due days covers a simple close. Paying for software makes sense when it removes hours of reconciliation and entry work, not when it only makes the checklist easier to read.

If your hours go into building reconciliations and entries, compare tools on cost per hour removed. That's where agents such as our Close Agent remove the most work.

How to choose month-end close software

Choosing by your bottleneck, rather than by brand, helps you buy the software that removes the most work. These eight questions narrow most shortlists to two or three tools:

  1. Where do your close hours go?In Ledge's 2025 survey of 100 finance professionals, reconciling accounts was the biggest time sink in the close, and cash reconciliation alone took 20–50 hours a month.
  2. Do you want the work tracked or done?Close management tools track it, automation platforms handle rule-based matching, and agents prepare the rest for your review.
  3. Do you have to replace your ERP?Some vendors sell a replacement ledger alongside their close features. If you're keeping your ERP, confirm the tool works on top of it, reading balances and posting approved entries back.
  4. Which ERP and how many entities?Confirm the tool reads from and writes to your ERP, and check how it handles each entity and currency.
  5. What controls do you need?Look for preparer and reviewer separation, approval before posting, a full audit trail, and a period lock, especially if you're audited or preparing for SOX.
  6. Will it pass your security review?Ask where your data runs, whether it can run in your own cloud, whether models ever see your credentials, and which SOC 2 reports the vendor holds.
  7. Who runs it day to day?Ask how much admin the tool needs after go-live and who on your team will own it.
  8. What do customers like you say?Read reviews on G2 and Gartner Peer Insights for setup time and support, and ask each vendor for a reference customer on your ERP and at your size.

How to test close software before you buy

A test on your own data shows you more than any demo, because it reveals how the tool handles your exceptions. Run this test with your top two tools over one week, using one bank account and one recent month:

  1. Connect your dataLink your ERP and one bank account, or upload the statement.
  2. Run the reconciliationSee how many transactions match automatically and how long setup takes.
  3. Work an exceptionPick one unmatched item and see how the tool finds the cause and shows its evidence.
  4. Prepare the entryHave the tool draft the correcting or accrual entry, with its support attached.
  5. Approve itRoute the entry to a reviewer who didn't prepare it, and check the audit trail.
  6. Post and verifyPost the approved entry to your ERP and confirm the posted entry matches the approved one line for line.

Example

Your bank account has 1,200 transactions in March. Tool A matches 1,020 automatically and leaves 180 for your team, while Tool B matches 1,140 and leaves 60. If each manual match takes two minutes, Tool A leaves 180 × 2 = 360 minutes, or 6 hours, of work. Tool B leaves 60 × 2 = 120 minutes, or 2 hours, for that one account each month.

Demos, pilots, and free trials

A scripted demo shows you the product at its best, so treat it as a first filter only. Ask each finalist for a pilot on your own data, even a short one. Agree in advance what counts as success: the share of transactions matched, the time to resolve an exception, and whether the posted entry matches the approved one.

To see our Close Agent run this test on your own data, book a working session.
